A LETTER FROM TINA
Why I wrote I Was a Poor Prognosis—and what I hope it gives you
Some stories begin with a date on a calendar. Mine began with a moment of certainty that vanished—when my own mind stopped feeling like a place I could rely on. In the years that followed, I moved through fear, trauma, and the exhausting work of putting life back together. I also kept asking the question that wouldn’t leave me alone: what helps the brain heal when willpower and good intentions aren’t enough? This book is my attempt to answer that honestly, from the inside and from my professional training.
I Was a Poor Prognosis is not a promise of a cure, and it isn’t medical advice. It’s a personal and professional account of what it was like to lose my footing—and the steps, supports, and learning that helped me find it again. Along the way, I introduce neurofeedback in plain language: what it is, what it felt like for me, what we do and don’t know, and why brain-based approaches can matter in trauma and addiction recovery conversations.
If you’re here because you’re struggling, supporting someone you love, or working in a helping profession, I wrote with you in mind. I know how isolating symptoms can feel, and how confusing the sea of “treatments” can be. My hope is that these pages offer steadiness: a way to think about brain health without shame, hype, or oversimplification—plus practical questions you can take into any conversation with a qualified provider.
Most of all, I want you to come away with language for what you’re experiencing and permission to keep looking for what helps. Recovery is rarely a straight line. But it can be real, and it can be yours—one informed next step at a time.
Thank you for reading, and for taking your own brain health seriously.
